You may not know that Grandparents’ Day was born thanks to a special woman and a meaningful occasion. October 2nd is the day when the Church celebrates Guardian Angels — figures who protect, love, and connect — just like grandparents, who are an emotional and often financial pillar for many families.
The special woman behind this idea was Marian McQuade, a housewife from Virginia, mother of 15 and grandmother of 40. In 1970, she began promoting the idea of a national day dedicated to grandparents, and in 1978, U.S. President Jimmy Carter officially established National Grandparents Day, celebrated on the first Sunday of September after Labor Day.
In Italy, Grandparents’ Day was officially recognized as a civil holiday on October 2nd, and every year the President of the Republic awards ten grandparents with the “National Grandfather and Grandmother of Italy” prize.
Maybe our own grandparents won’t receive that award, but we certainly don’t want them to feel any less special — and a thoughtful gift will surely make them smile, even if it’s not handed over by the President himself!
